  次は,同じ高校のサッカー部に所属している真紀(Maki)とスーザン(Suzan)が交わした会話の一部です。 会話文を読んで,あとの問いに答えなさい。

Susan: Maki, next Sunday, we are going to have an impor tant game with the Bears, our biggest rival. I’m really excited! Last year we lost to them. I hear that the Bears have been quite strong this year. Do you really think we can win?

Maki: I don’t know. Since we lost to them, we have ver y hard, and our new freshman players are really good. Our team is last year. So I think we have a good chance of winning.

Susan: Yes, I know. But last year we also thought that we could win. And then they beat us, 4 to 1. Do you remember that?

Maki: Of course I do. But this year will dif ferent. It’s impor tant for us to believe and practice hard. I’m sure our team is stronger than the Bears this year.

Susan: You’re right. We should do our best.

Maki: By the way, Susan, my cousin will come to visit me next month. I want to buy her a bir thday present. She bought me a really nice bag for my bir thday last year. Do you have any good ideas?

Susan: Your cousin? Is she the girl I saw at Minami Park last July? Her name is ...

Maki: Eriko. You saw her when we were playing soccer in the park. Susan: Yes, I remember! Well, what is she interested in?

Maki: She is a good tennis player, and she likes the outdoors. She often goes camping in the mountains with her friends.

Susan: How about giving her a nice cap? It will be useful when she’s out in the sun and when she plays tennis.

Maki: No. She already has many caps. Three years ago, I ⒞ her two caps, and she uses them

even now. .

Susan: Oh, I see. How about buying her a lantern? When she’s out in the mountains at night, it’s always good to have a bright lanter n. The campfire provides some light, but a lanter n is brighter, and it’s really useful for people to have a light in their tents.

Maki: That’s an interesting idea. She’s going camping in the mountains next month, so I think she will like it. Where can I buy a good lantern?

Susan: You can get one at the depar tment store near the station. I don’t know , but maybe it isn’t so expensive. You should buy a batter y-powered one. The gas-powered ones are dangerous. The batter y-powered ones will last quite a long time, and they’re much safer. Maki: Oh, I see. Can you come with me tomorrow and help me with my shopping?

Susan: Sure. I’d love to.

  次は,中学生のマサル(Masaru)が,英語の授業で行ったスピーチの原稿です。この原稿を読んで,あとの 問いに答えなさい。

Good morning, ever yone. Today I will tell you about household waste. A month ago, I read an ar ticle about household waste on the Inter net. It said: “Each person in Japan makes about 360 kilograms of waste a year, and Japan makes about 45 million tons of waste a year. The amount of waste in Japan is ver y large. We sor t our garbage carefully, but only 21 percent is recycled.

》 Cities spend a lot of money to burn household waste. What do you think about that?” I was surprised to read that ar ticle, so I told some of my friends about it. I made a group with six

other students and we decided to reduce our garbage. Look at this graph. It shows some kinds of household waste in our city.

We must reduce these kinds of waste. All of us talked about the waste problem with our families. For one month, we all tried to r educe the amount of garbage from our homes.

  First, we tried to reduce our kitchen garbage. Some f a m i l i e s r e d u c e d t h e a m o u n t o f k i t c h e n g a r b a g e b y composting it. Other families tried to eat all of the food. They didn’t buy too much food. In this way, all of our families reduced our kitchen garbage.

Second, we tried to reduce paper waste. We found that

we threw away too much packaging paper. So we tried to reuse a lot of packaging paper. For example, we made bookcases with some packaging paper and cardboard. It was a lot of fun! We also learned that we could recycle used paper to make new paper. We also reused cloth.

Third, we tried to reuse glass bottles, cans, and PET bottles. For example, I made a flower vase with a juice bottle. Takeru is in the ar t club. He brought some glass bottles, cans, and PET bottles to school and made pretty ar t works. You will see his works at the school festival next week! We also lear ned that we could glass bottles, cans and PET bottles, so we never threw them away as household waste.

Well, all of us were able to reduce a lot of our household waste. We only needed a little ef for t. If ever yone in class tries to reduce or reuse something, it will make a big dif ference. For example, you can tr y to bring shopping bags from home when you go shopping. By doing so, you can reduce some waste because you don’t have to throw away plastic bags. Let’s reduce, reuse, and recycle more !
